Man Dies After Vehicle Submerged at East 9th Street Pier

A man has died after Cleveland firefighters pulled him from a vehicle that went into Lake Erie early Saturday morning.

Incident Details

The Cleveland Division of Fire was called to the East 9th Street Pier just before 2:45 a.m. after reports of a vehicle submerged about 100 feet from shore, with its taillights still visible above the surface.

Two divers entered the water from the pier and swam to the vehicle. Using forcible entry tools, they gained access and pulled a man from inside.

Rescue Efforts

Once the victim was brought to the surface, firefighters aboard Marine 21 began CPR and assisted in bringing him to dry land. Cleveland EMS later pronounced him dead at the scene.

A second dive was performed to ensure no additional passengers were inside the vehicle. Crews confirmed the car was empty.

Aftermath

Later that afternoon, recovery teams pulled the vehicle from the lake. The man’s identity has not been released, and officials have not provided details on how the vehicle ended up in the water.

The incident remains under investigation.
