U.S. Marshals Arrest Suspect in East Cleveland Shooting That Killed One, Injured Another

EAST CLEVELAND — A 43-year-old man has been arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in June in East Cleveland, according to officials. The suspect, Verdine Glover, was taken into custody Friday by the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force at an apartment in the 1800 block of Lakeview Road.

The incident in question dates to June 20, when officers responded to a call in the 1300 block of East 117th Street. There, they found two men shot: 55-year-old Edward Walker, who suffered a stomach wound that was non-life-threatening, and 55-year-old Lavelle Scales, who later died from his injuries at a hospital.

Following the shooting, Cleveland police issued warrants for Glover’s arrest for charges of aggravated murder and felonious assault. He remained at large until this week.

U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott praised the inter-agency effort in the arrest. “Another case closed due to the outstanding work by the men and women of the Cleveland Division of Police homicide division. Our partnership has resulted in dozens of Cleveland homicide suspects being arrested this year, and we will continue to work hand in hand to take these violent fugitives off the street.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shootings, including motive and whether others were involved. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force at 1-866-4WANTED (1-866-492-6833).
