Johnny Gaudreau and his 29-year-old brother Matthew were in New Jersey to attend their sister Katie’s wedding. The incident occurred around 8:19 p.m. on County Route 551 when Sean Higgins, 43, of Woodstown, New Jersey, reportedly attempted to overtake two vehicles and collided with the Gaudreau brothers. Both men succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

New Jersey State Police charged Higgins with two counts of vehicular homicide after he admitted to consuming several beers before the crash and subsequently failed field sobriety tests. Higgins is currently held at the Salem County Correctional Facility awaiting a detention hearing.

The Columbus Blue Jackets expressed their profound grief, stating, “The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy. Johnny was not only a great hockey player but also a beloved family man. Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

In a poignant eulogy, Johnny’s widow, Meredith Gaudreau, announced that she is expecting their third child. The couple, who have two young children, was in the midst of celebrating their family life when the tragedy struck. Meredith reflected on their time together, sharing that despite their short time as a family of four, it was filled with cherished memories. She revealed that she is nine weeks pregnant and described Johnny’s excitement upon learning the news.

The funeral service, held at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Media, Pennsylvania, was attended by friends, family, and Blue Jackets players, who came together to honor the memory of Johnny and Matthew. Meredith praised Johnny’s dedication to his family and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community.

Johnny Gaudreau, known for his impressive NHL career, had recently signed with the Blue Jackets and made a significant impact during his time with the team. His career highlights include multiple All-Star selections and a memorable stint with the Calgary Flames.

The loss of the Gaudreau brothers marks a somber moment for the hockey community, echoing the earlier tragedy of goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks, who also passed away unexpectedly in 2021.

The Gaudreau family, deeply affected by this loss, has asked for privacy as they navigate their grief and the challenges ahead.
