Authorities are investigating a suspected murder-suicide after the bodies of a woman and her 9-year-old son were discovered in a house fire in Amherst Township, Lorain County, on Wednesday morning.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 300 block of Broadway Avenue around 7:30 a.m. to extinguish a blaze at a residence. Upon gaining entry, they found the bodies of the woman and child inside the home. Preliminary findings suggest the mother may have taken her son’s life before setting the house on fire and ending her own life, according to the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.
Community Reeling from Tragedy
The child was a student at Powers Elementary in the Amherst Exempted School District. Superintendent Mike Molnar addressed the loss in a letter to the community, expressing profound sadness and offering support.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the death of one of our beloved elementary students,” Molnar wrote. “Counseling and support services will be available for students, staff, and the broader community as we navigate this incredibly difficult time.”
Captain Robert E. Vansant Jr. of the sheriff’s office echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the deep impact of the tragedy on the Amherst and Amherst Township communities. “Our thoughts are with those affected during this incredibly difficult time,” Vansant stated.

In response to the tragedy, the school district has pledged to provide ongoing support for grieving students, staff, and families. Molnar assured the community that updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
The identities of the victims have not been released, but authorities confirmed that the child was a 9-year-old boy. The investigation remains active, and officials are working to uncover further details surrounding the incident.
