An 81-year-old woman is facing multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter, following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 69-year-old man.
According to Jackson Township police, the driver, identified as Barbara J. O’Donnell, mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake on October 4, causing her vehicle to crash into Angello’s 2 Go pizza shop. The accident claimed the life of Andrew Grosschmidt, who was at the counter of the restaurant when the vehicle struck the building.
O’Donnell has also been charged with operating a vehicle without reasonable control, a minor misdemeanor.
Police reports indicate that Grosschmidt, a grandfather, was standing near the front counter when the car entered the establishment, resulting in his fatal injuries.
The charges O’Donnell faces carry significant penalties. Vehicular homicide, a first-degree misdemeanor, could lead to up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Vehicular manslaughter, classified as a second-degree misdemeanor, could result in up to 90 days in jail and a $750 fine.
A court hearing is set for December 2 at 8:45 a.m. in Massillon Municipal Court, where the case will proceed.
