Longtime Stark County Legislator Kirk Schuring Passes Away at 72

Lawmakers and community members are mourning the loss of Kirk Schuring, a dedicated public servant who represented Stark County in the Ohio Legislature for more than three decades. Schuring passed away at the age of 72.

Friday was a somber day at the Ohio Statehouse, where Schuring’s absence was deeply felt.

“Ohio has lost one of its most effective advocates,” said former Ohio House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, reflecting on Schuring’s enduring impact.

Schuring, a Republican from Canton, had been battling health issues and spent recent months working remotely from home or the hospital. Rosenberger, a close friend, spoke emotionally about Schuring’s tireless dedication to his community.

“He was always looking for ways to strengthen his hometown, whether through economic development, support for the Football Hall of Fame, or simply assisting a family in need,” Rosenberger said.

A lifelong resident of Northeast Ohio, Schuring graduated from Perry High School in Stark County and attended Kent State University. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Over his distinguished career, Schuring held leadership roles in both chambers of the Ohio Legislature, including serving as Speaker Pro Tempore under Rosenberger and President Pro Tempore under Senate President Matt Huffman. He was the second-longest-serving lawmaker in Ohio’s history.

“Kirk was a statesman,” Huffman said. “His commitment, drive, and integrity made him one of the finest Ohioans to serve in the General Assembly. His heart was in Ohio, and his dedication showed in everything he did.”

Schuring’s legislative achievements spanned economic development, healthcare reform, and protections for survivors of sexual assault. Known for his ability to work across party lines, he earned respect from colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

“He had a remarkable ability to see the bigger picture,” said Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio, a Democrat from Lakewood. “As a Democrat, I knew I could approach him with ideas, and he would bring them to his caucus for consideration.”

Antonio praised Schuring’s bipartisan approach and his dedication to improving life for all Ohioans. She also fondly remembered his dry humor and ability to foster unity among lawmakers.

“Ohio is undoubtedly better because of his service,” Antonio said.

Schuring’s contributions extended beyond the legislature, earning recognition from a variety of nonpartisan organizations, including those advocating for veterans, educators, and children.

“You can’t replace someone like Kirk Schuring,” said Rosenberger. “The void he leaves is immense, but his legacy will continue to inspire.”

Although his seat will remain empty, Kirk Schuring’s impact on Ohio will endure for generations to come.
