15-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot by Officer During Confrontation in Akron

A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot during a confrontation with Akron police late Thursday night, authorities confirmed. The Summit County Medical Examiner identified the teenager as Jazmir Tucker of Maple Heights.

According to Akron Police Captain Michael Miller, the incident occurred around 11 p.m. when officers, parked in a cruiser while working on a report, heard gunfire nearby and moved to investigate. Officers encountered Tucker, who was reportedly armed with a loaded firearm. During the confrontation, one officer discharged their weapon, striking the teen. Tucker was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The second officer present did not fire any shots, and neither officer sustained injuries. Both officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, as per department policy. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is conducting an independent investigation, and the Akron Police Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will carry out a separate internal review.

Community and Official Responses

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik released a statement expressing condolences to Tucker’s family and urging patience as the investigation unfolds. “Every loss of life is a tragedy, and to lose a young life is heartbreaking,” Malik said. He emphasized the importance of transparency, noting that body-worn camera footage from the incident will be released within the week.

The Fraternal Order of Police Akron Lodge #7 also issued a statement, confirming the officers’ cooperation with the investigation and pledging to provide an updated press release as more details emerge.

City Councilman Eric D. Garrett Sr. echoed calls for transparency while highlighting the need for enhanced de-escalation training for law enforcement. “Effective de-escalation techniques can save lives,” Garrett said. “We must invest in strategies that equip officers to manage high-stress encounters while protecting everyone involved.”

Eyewitness Account

Trevoris Bell, a resident near the scene, described hearing gunshots and witnessing the aftermath. “We actually heard gunshots. It was pretty alarming,” Bell recounted. He said he saw Tucker lying face down with no movement as officers issued commands. Bell expressed concern about the impact such incidents have on the community, particularly children. “We’ve got kids around here. They play outside. Situations like this are traumatizing,” he said.

The city’s heightened focus on transparency and accountability comes as the community awaits further details from the ongoing investigation.
