On Sunday morning, a building collapse in Cleveland Heights forced The Fairmount restaurant to close indefinitely. The incident occurred when the upper façade of the building fell onto the pavement below. City officials attribute the collapse to a combination of the building’s age and the storm that struck on Saturday night, which destabilized the structure. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, despite the fact that owner Jacob Orosz and staff were present at the time.
A structural engineer is currently assessing the remaining portion of the building to determine if there is a risk of further collapse. The investigation is ongoing, with police and the fire department involved.
Update, August 19th: The Cleveland Heights Fire Department (CHFD) and the structural engineer have deemed the building safe. Starting Monday, patrons will be able to access The Fairmount through the back entrance.
