In the wake of growing concerns about school safety, some residents are calling for the Parma City School District to consider installing metal detectors in its schools.
Community members like Matt Kucere and Valorie have expressed unease about the safety of students. Kucere pointed out the increasing frequency of incidents involving weapons in schools, saying, “Every day, someone has a bad day and brings a gun to school. It’s gotten out of hand.” Valorie echoed these concerns, stating that students could easily bring other dangerous items like knives or tasers, adding, “Why trust that they won’t bring something just to show off to their friends?”
Both Valorie and Kucere believe metal detectors could be a valuable safety measure, especially as parents and grandparents like Kucere worry about their children’s well-being in today’s environment. “I have grandkids, and I’m concerned for them,” he said.
Superintendent Dr. Charles Smialek acknowledged that recent national events, including a mass shooting in Georgia, have heightened concerns among parents. In response, the district plans to hold a town hall meeting on Tuesday to discuss safety and security, providing an opportunity for the community to voice questions and concerns.
While the use of metal detectors will be one of the topics discussed, Smialek expressed some reservations, noting that they might provide a “false sense of security” and are not always effective in preventing school shootings. However, he remains open to discussing the idea with the community.
The district has already implemented several security enhancements, including dual locking vestibules, upgraded communication systems, and ballistic film on windows designed to prevent breakage. These measures aim to improve overall safety for students and staff while exploring additional options to address rising concerns.
