Filmmakers from around the world are preparing to gather in Chagrin Falls as the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival (CDFF) celebrates its 15th anniversary from October 1 to 6. The festival, now a prominent event in the documentary film circuit, will showcase films from 32 countries, with a record-breaking 70 directors in attendance.
This year’s festival is particularly special as it marks the first time CDFF will fully utilize its new permanent venue, CDFF on the Triangle. Executive Director Mary Ann Ponce expressed her excitement about the milestone. “We’re thrilled to finally have a permanent home for our festival,” Ponce said. “This allows us to host a variety of events, from film screenings to discussions and parties, all in one place.”
The festival kicks off with the Ohio premiere of “Blink,” a documentary directed by Oscar-winner Daniel Roher and Edmund Stenson. The film follows the emotional journey of the Pelletier family, who travel the world to show their three children the wonders of the globe before they lose their vision due to a rare genetic condition.
A Five-Day Exploration of Documentaries
Over the course of the five-day event, 66 films will be screened, offering audiences the chance to engage in Q&A sessions with filmmakers, attend panel discussions, and enjoy special events like “Docs & Donuts” and “Bourbon & Ballads.”
Showcasing Local and Global Talent
Among the filmmakers presenting their work is Cleveland Heights native Adam Dew, whose film “The Grandview Pizza Oven” humorously explores a neighborhood feud. “It’s captured a lot of attention,” Dew said. “The film really highlights the complexities of living harmoniously with neighbors.”
Another filmmaker, Judit Angel, will screen her personal documentary, “Soñando America,” which delves into her family’s immigration journey from Mexico to the U.S. “I learned so much about my family while making this film,” Angel shared. “It was challenging, but it brought us closer.”
Local talent Chris Langer will also present his documentary “Ripples of Plastic,” which investigates the environmental issues facing the Great Lakes. “I wanted to shine a light on what’s happening right here in our region,” Langer explained. “It’s a topic that’s gaining more attention, and the timing is right.”
Festival Screenings and Events
In addition to screenings at multiple venues around the village, including Chagrin Valley Little Theatre and Chagrin Falls Intermediate School Theater, the festival will host its opening night at the new CDFF on the Triangle venue. The evening will feature a red-carpet event, VIP receptions, and local food, followed by the 7 p.m. screening of “Blink.”
Tickets for the opening reception are $125, while individual film tickets can be purchased for $15. The festival promises a packed schedule, bringing together filmmakers and film lovers for a celebration of documentary storytelling.
