As we approach the end of October, the weather in central Ohio can vary dramatically, ranging from late summer warmth to early winter chill. This unpredictability presents challenges, especially for parents planning outdoor activities like trick-or-treating.

Looking ahead to Halloween this week, Thursday will see a shift in weather patterns. The day is expected to start with mild temperatures in the mid-70s, but by the time evening falls and the trick-or-treat festivities commence, temperatures will likely drop into the 60s. The skies will gradually become overcast by midday, with late afternoon rain expected to linger into the evening hours. While the precipitation is anticipated to be light, it may dampen the spirits of young trick-or-treaters.

Historically, Halloween weather in Columbus can be quite variable. Average temperatures on October 31 range from the upper 30s in the morning to around 60 degrees in the afternoon. The warmest Halloween recorded in Columbus occurred in 1950, with a high of 83 degrees, while the coldest was just 38 degrees in 1906. Last year’s Halloween was notably chilly, with snow flurries and temperatures only reaching the mid-40s. In fact, 1993 holds the record for the snowiest Halloween, with an inch of snow, while the wettest was in 2019, when 1.51 inches of rain fell.

As we prepare for this year’s festivities, the weather leading up to Halloween will be unusually warm. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be near record-breaking, with temperatures soaring to around 80 degrees under sunny skies, thanks to gusty southwesterly winds. However, this unseasonable warmth will give way to a cold front on Thursday, bringing the aforementioned chance for rain and cooler temperatures.

Following Thursday’s rain, the weather will take a turn for the cooler, with Friday seeing highs in the mid-50s and a mostly cloudy sky. The weekend is expected to bring a return to sunnier conditions, with Saturday forecasted to be mostly sunny and temperatures in the upper 50s. However, another chance for rain appears on Sunday with scattered showers possible.

For parents preparing their youngsters for trick-or-treating, it’s essential to dress them in layers. Start with a warm base layer, add a fun costume, and top it off with a waterproof jacket to stay dry during the light rain. Don’t forget to ensure that costumes are visible and safe for evening activities.

With this unpredictable weather, planning ahead can help make Halloween enjoyable for all. Whether it’s warm or cool, rainy or clear, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a successful Halloween night.
