On Wednesday, students and staff at Riverview Elementary School demonstrated their appreciation for their School Resource Officer (SRO) by donning blue and black attire. This heartfelt welcome came in the wake of a serious incident that occurred just days earlier, on October 31, when a shot was fired in the school’s parking lot.
The shooting incident, which was confirmed by Lake County Sheriff Frank Leonbruno, unfolded around 9 a.m. when the SRO, a deputy with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a domestic violence-related situation that began off-campus. Upon arriving at the scene, the officer confronted the suspect, ordering him to drop his weapon. A single round was discharged, striking the windshield of another vehicle, but fortunately, no students or staff were injured during this alarming event.
The suspect, identified as off-duty Cleveland Police Sergeant Alexander Sinclair, was taken into custody and is facing serious charges, including felonious assault, kidnapping, and discharging a firearm on or near a prohibited premise. Currently held at the Lake County Jail, Sinclair has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Cleveland Police confirmed that he will be suspended without pay pending the outcome of his court proceedings.
In the aftermath of the incident, Riverview Elementary was placed on lockdown for about an hour as law enforcement responded to ensure the safety of students and staff. The situation was managed effectively, thanks in part to the swift actions of the SRO, whose bravery will soon be recognized with a national award for heroism from the One in Five Foundation for Kids. This nonprofit organization, which was founded in response to the tragic Uvalde school shooting, aims to promote safety and support in schools across the nation.
Daniel Chapin, the founder of the One in Five Foundation, commended the SRO’s actions: “This brave officer represents the immediate result of having committed, empathetic law enforcement on our nation’s campuses. The officer utilized their training in observing a potential threat to students and acted swiftly and methodically to ensure student safety. We salute the officer and the department he serves. Heroes still wear badges.”
As a sign of gratitude, a large “thank you” banner was displayed in front of Riverview Elementary, symbolizing the community’s appreciation for the efforts of the SRO and law enforcement. A presentation ceremony honoring the SRO for his quick response is expected to be announced soon.
The Riverside Local Schools district issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to safety and the well-being of their students. They reported that there were several EMS transports from the scene due to non-life-threatening injuries, further emphasizing the need for vigilance and preparedness in school environments.
As Riverview Elementary School continues to process the events of that day, the community stands united in support of their School Resource Officer, celebrating his commitment to keeping students safe.
