A massive fire tore through Byright Auto Sales, a family-owned car dealership on Cleveland’s West Side, early Monday morning. The blaze, which broke out at Lorain Avenue and West 48th Street just after midnight, also spread to an adjacent building, causing significant damage.
Cleveland fire officials estimate the total loss at approximately $500,000. Among the casualties of the fire were several vintage vehicles, including a 1969 Torino 428 Cobra Jet, a 1957 Chevy, and a 1969 Mustang convertible.
More than 60 firefighters from 17 units battled the inferno, employing defensive tactics to protect lives while combating the intense flames. According to Lieutenant Mike Norman, Cleveland Fire Public Information Officer, the fire was so intense that crews had to rely on at least four ladder trucks to fight the flames from above. Despite their efforts, multiple walls and the roof of the dealership collapsed under the fire’s intensity.
The situation was declared under control around 3:16 a.m., but shortly before 7 a.m., flames appeared to have reignited, requiring additional attention from fire crews.
Byright Auto Sales, a staple in the community, is a locally operated business. The extent of the damage to the dealership and its attached building has left a significant mark on the neighborhood. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
