Two Cleveland Water Workers Injured in Work Zone Crash; Driver Arrested

CLEVELAND — Two Cleveland Water employees were hospitalized early Thursday morning after a vehicle crashed into their work zone, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. near the intersection of S. Miles Road and Langley Avenue, where the crew was responding to a water main break.

According to Cleveland Water, an SUV entered the coned-off work area and struck two workers, leaving one in critical condition. Emergency responders transported a 55-year-old man to University Hospitals with severe injuries, while a 21-year-old man was treated for minor injuries.

Police located the suspected vehicle and its driver in Maple Heights just before 3 a.m. A 61-year-old man was taken into custody, though authorities have not yet released his identity.

“The safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority,” Cleveland Water said in a statement. “We continue to urge drivers to remain alert, slow down, and follow all posted signs when approaching work zones.”

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
