Six Months Later After Alleged Infant Abuse, Lake County Family Seeks Justice

It’s now been six months after an alleged case of child abuse, a Lake County family is still searching for answers and calling for justice. They are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing. The Willowick Police Department continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse, with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office also reviewing the case.

This week, supporters gathered outside the Lake County Courthouse to renew attention to the matter. “We’re trying to bring some light to this, to the Lake County Prosecutors and the Willowick Detectives to please do something,” said Jeri Kuzma, a family friend. Jennifer Kvoriak, the grandmother of 16-month-old Makenna, says the child has made progress but still faces significant challenges. “She’s growing, she’s thriving, and she’s in therapy five days a week,” she said.

Back in November, 2023, Makenna weighed only 12 pounds at six months old. According to her grandmother, she was rushed to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital over Memorial Day weekend. The family’s attorney, Laura Depledge, believes that a key piece of information could help move the case forward. “We think somebody out there knows something and that is going to tip the scales so that we can get some justice for Makenna,” Depledge stated.

Despite her progress, Makenna still struggles with basic functions like walking, eating, seeing, or even holding a bottle. Kvoriak made it clear, “I want charges filed.”

Kuzma added that while the family has met with prosecutors, they are frustrated by the lack of action. “Jennifer and her family have met with the prosecutors as well. Again, lots of promises, no action,” she said. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding this case to contact Detective Greg Spakes at 440-585-1234 or Carolyn Mulligan at the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office at 440-350-2683.

For those who wish to support the family, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover Makenna’s medical expenses.
