Community Mourns Loss of 13-Year-Old Matthew Schultz After Tragic Parade Accident in Green

The City of Green is mourning the loss of 13-year-old Matthew Schultz, who died Monday during the city’s Memorial Day parade. The Summit County Medical Examiner confirmed Tuesday that Matthew, a North Canton resident, suffered fatal injuries after falling from a trailer and being run over during the parade.

According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. while Matthew was riding on a float operated by Air Ninja Gym. He was one of seven children aboard the trailer, accompanied by two adults walking alongside. Emergency personnel from the Green Fire Department, positioned directly behind the float, responded immediately after Matthew fell. He was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:04 p.m.

Matthew was a student at North Canton City Schools, who described him as “a kind and caring student” known for his love of Star Wars and fruit snacks. In a statement, the district expressed its condolences and confirmed that counseling resources would be available for students and staff. Families were also encouraged to use the Stark County Crisis Line or national 988 mental health hotline for additional support.

“Matthew was just 13 years old, but in that short time, he brought a lifetime worth of joy to those who knew him,” said family spokesperson Danielle Paciorek. “He was a bright light, full of curiosity, laughter and love.”

Mayor Rocco Yeargin acknowledged the community’s grief, especially among those who witnessed the accident, and emphasized the city’s ongoing commitment to supporting Matthew’s family. He added that while parade safety protocols would be reviewed in the future, the city’s current focus is on mourning and healing.

The Green Fire Union has donated $3,000 raised during the city’s annual Memorial Day pancake breakfast to assist the Schultz family, with further fundraising updates expected to be shared on the city’s website.

Counselors will be available at Green High School throughout the week for anyone in the community in need of support.
