Springfield Township Police: Man Injured While Building Homemade Explosive

Authorities say a man was hospitalized Saturday afternoon after a homemade explosive detonated while he was attempting to construct it inside a Springfield Township residence.

Police and fire crews responded to reports of an explosion at Frank’s Mobile Home Park, where they discovered a man suffering from significant hand injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital. His current condition has not been released.

An investigation revealed the injured individual had been building multiple explosive devices. Officers recovered additional explosive components and materials from the home, according to the Springfield Township Police Department.

Due to the presence of undetonated devices, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called in to safely remove and dispose of the materials. Federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are also assisting with the investigation.

In a statement, Springfield Township Police warned of the dangers associated with homemade explosives.

“Constructing or possessing these devices is not only illegal, but extremely dangerous,” officials said. “This incident, while contained, highlights the serious risks such actions pose to individuals and the surrounding community.”

Authorities have not announced any charges at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
