Four Teens Shot, One Killed During Unpermitted Block Party on Cleveland’s Southeast Side

Cleveland police are investigating a shooting that left one teenager dead and three others injured during what authorities described as an unpermitted block party on the city’s southeast side.

Officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots just before midnight Saturday, July 19, in the 16400 block of Highview Drive. When they arrived, they found a 17-year-old girl grazed by a bullet and a 15-year-old boy lying in the street with a gunshot wound.

Both were taken to area hospitals. The girl was listed in stable condition, while the boy — later identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office as 15-year-old Darnell Haynes of Cleveland Heights — was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators later confirmed that two additional victims, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman, had also been shot and taken to local hospitals by private vehicles. Their conditions have not been released.

Police said the shooting occurred during a large gathering that had not been permitted by the city. The circumstances that led to the gunfire remain under investigation.

Cleveland’s Homicide Unit is handling the case and has not announced any arrests. Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives at 216-623-5464 or provide anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at 216-252-7463.
