Teen Injured in Late-Night Shooting at Summit County Fairgrounds Parking Lot

Authorities are investigating a late-night shooting that left a 17-year-old injured outside the Summit County Fairgrounds in Tallmadge on Saturday.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office reports the shooting occurred around 11:15 p.m., after the fair had closed for the day. Preliminary findings indicate that an unidentified man opened fire, striking a parked vehicle and hitting the teenager inside. The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle.

The teen was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“You’ve got to have a little faith — you can’t just judge everyone by appearances — but that’s a little insane,” said Hope Box, a fairgoer who expressed concern about the violence.

The Summit County Fair Board released a statement assuring visitors of its continued commitment to safety: “We remain steadfast in our commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for all fair attendees. We are grateful for the thousands who come to enjoy the fair each year and regret that the actions of a few individuals threaten that experience.”

The incident capped off a weekend of disruptions at the fair. On Friday, the animal barns closed slightly earlier than planned after two teens threw objects at barn doors, prompting false rumors about a potential shooting. “There was no evidence or credible threat involving a firearm or planned violence,” the Fair Board clarified.

Later that evening, a separate altercation — reportedly linked to a video challenge — broke out along the Midway. A juvenile male was arrested for using a taser, and organizers shut down the fair 20 minutes early to prevent further incidents.

In response to the series of disturbances, additional sheriff’s deputies and drone surveillance were deployed on Sunday. The fair also enacted stricter bag policies to enhance security.

Despite the tension, crowds continued to attend. “I still want to come support the community and have fun,” said a woman who identified herself as Princess. “Even though there are troubles in our city, it shouldn’t stop us from living our lives.”

Local resident Todd Danforth echoed the sentiment, saying he hopes the “riffraff” will stay away so families can enjoy the fair.

Anyone with information about Saturday night’s shooting is urged to contact the Summit County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau at 330-643-8087.
