Shaker Heights Police Searching for Suspect After Hours-Long Standoff

Shaker Heights police are searching for a Cleveland man accused of domestic violence after an hours-long standoff Monday ended without his arrest.

Officers responded to a home on the 3000 block of Westbury Road just before 7 a.m. after receiving reports of a domestic assault. Police said 32-year-old Devonte Nunnery allegedly struck a 30-year-old woman, the mother of his children, several times in the face before entering her home. The victim, who suffered visible injuries, was taken to a hospital and later released.

Believing Nunnery was still inside the home, police surrounded the residence and locked down the area for several hours. The standoff lasted until after 2 p.m., when officers entered the home and discovered he was not there.

Authorities said Nunnery already had outstanding warrants in Cleveland and Shaker Heights related to family offenses, as well as a contempt of court charge in Lakewood. Police also noted he has a documented history of violence against the victim.

As of Monday evening, Nunnery remained at large. Investigators released his photo and urged anyone who sees him to call 911 immediately.

“We would like to remind victims of domestic violence that you are not alone,” Shaker Heights Police Cmdr. John Cole said in a statement.

The case remains under investigation.
