Cleveland Man Charged in Fatal Labor Day Hit-and-Run

A 21-year-old man is facing charges after a deadly hit-and-run crash in Cleveland that left a dirt bike rider dead on Labor Day.

According to court records, the suspect, identified as Andre C. Diggs, was driving a Ford Explorer at a high rate of speed on St. Clair Avenue when he ran a red light and struck a Yamaha dirt bike. Police say the rider, later identified as Reginald Phillips, was attempting to turn left onto St. Clair from Nottingham Road when the crash occurred.

The impact threw Phillips from the bike, which slid into a parking lot and burst into flames. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Diggs fled the area immediately after the collision. Officers later located the damaged SUV on Penhurst Road. Police determined the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Maple Heights, and evidence tied Diggs to the driver’s seat at the time of the crash.

Diggs has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and receiving stolen property. Authorities say additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.

Police have not released further details about whether drugs, alcohol, or other factors may have contributed to the crash.
