Man Seriously Injured in Shooting at Ohio City’s Market Square; Community Seeks Peace

CLEVELAND — A 34-year-old man was critically wounded after being shot late Friday night at Market Square Park, located across from the West Side Market in Ohio City. The shooting occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m., authorities said, leaving the victim in serious but stable condition after being transported to MetroHealth Medical Center. Shell casings were found throughout the scene near West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue. Cleveland police are actively investigating the incident, though no suspects have been named or apprehended.

Neighbors expressed shock and frustration at the latest violence in a neighborhood known for its vibrant atmosphere. “I have to pray because this is outrageous,” said local resident Sonia Rembert. “We’re all humans… this is very disturbing.” Another resident, Annie Fleece, offered a more resigned perspective, noting, “I don’t blink an eye when I hear about that stuff… life now.”

While violent crime remains rare in Ohio City overall, recent incidents serve as sobering reminders of safety challenges. In 2021, Market Square was the site of a fatal shooting that claimed one life and injured another. Three people were injured in another incident at the same location back in 2018. At the time, city officials described the episodes as anomalies and highlighted improvements in overall safety.

Amid redevelopment and neighborhood improvements, community leaders stress that amenities and resources must align with changes. Cara Coleman-Schutte, co-owner of Worts & Wards—a wellness and artisan goods store launching soon—said, “Violence in the neighborhood is disheartening, but it will not stop us from opening here.” She hopes the city and community can collaborate to co-create safer, more inclusive public spaces.

Crime in broader context
Cleveland followed a national trend of declining violent crime through the late 2010s but saw a spike around 2020–21. Today, while crime rates remain higher than the national average, targeted public safety and development efforts continue to make an impact, especially in areas like Ohio City. Law enforcement and community stakeholders alike emphasize that continued collaboration and investment are essential to keeping progress intact—and preventing future tragedies.
